Cleaning fruits and vegetables properly is essential for removing dirt, pesticides, and harmful bacteria. Here’s a simple guide to ensure your produce is safe for consumption.
1. Wash Your Hands:
Before handling any food, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This helps prevent the transfer of bacteria from your hands to the produce.
2. Use Clean Water:
Rinse fruits and vegetables under cold running water. Avoid using soap, bleach, or other chemical cleaners, as these can leave harmful residues. For hard-shelled produce like melons or cucumbers, use a produce brush to scrub the surface.
3. Remove Outer Leaves:
For leafy greens, such as lettuce or cabbage, remove the outer leaves. These are often more exposed to dirt and pesticides.

4. Soak When Necessary:
For items like potatoes or carrots, soaking them in a bowl of cool water for a few minutes can help loosen dirt. After soaking, scrub them with a brush to remove any remaining residue.

5. Vinegar Solution (Optional):
If you want an extra level of cleaning, you can soak fruits and vegetables in a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water for about 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water afterward to remove any vinegar taste.
*Honorable mention, instead of vinegar, you can soak the veggies and fruit in cool water, add iodized salt, lemon or lime juice with a splash of vinegar. This kills off bacteria and helps keep the produce fresh as well.
6. Dry with a Clean Cloth:
After washing, dry your produce with a clean cloth or paper towel. This step can help remove any lingering bacteria.

7. Store Properly:
Once cleaned, store your fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator, if appropriate, to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
Following these simple steps, you can ensure that your fruits and vegetables are not only clean but also safe to eat, helping you enjoy their health benefits free of worry.
