The show must go on! That rings true as everyone in Hollywood woke up in the wee hours of Wednesday to hear the 78th Golden Awards nominations. In a livestream presented by E! News and the Today Show, Golden Globes winners Taraji P. Henson and Sarah Jessica Parker announced the nominees in the comfort of their home.
The Golden Globes, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), made a few changes because of the current pandemic. While it’s still the first ceremony during the award season, it won’t premiere on its usual slot in January. They will present the golden statuettes on February 28th. Tina Fey and Amy Pohler will return as hosts for the first time since 2015, albeit from coast to coast. Fey will present at the Rockefeller Center’s Rainbow Room in NYC while Pohler stands center staged at the Beverly Hills Hotel in California.
Chadwick Boseman’s brilliant performance as Ma Rainey’s trumpeter Levee Green scored the late actor a Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama nom. It would be his last performance as he died from colon cancer in 2020. His co-star, Viola Davis, scored her first Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama nomination (this is her sixth overall nomination, winning her first in 2017 for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Fences).
Andra Day’s stunning performance as the “Strange Fruit” singer Billie Holliday in United States vs. Billie Holiday also garnered a Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama nom. It will be Day’s first nomination in any category.
Regina King continues to be a force behind the camera as she scored her first Best Director Motion Picture for her directorial debut, One Night in Miami. While the film didn’t get a Best Picture nomination, it gained two more performance nominations, including Leslie Odum Jr, starring as legendary singer Sam Cooke. He scored his first nomination for the Supporting Actor-Motion Picture category. The film also gained a nomination for Best Song Motion Picture.
Daniel Kaluuya will join the One Night in Miami star in the Best Supporting Actor-Motion Picture. He starred in Jadus and the Black Messiah as Fred Hampton, an assassinated activist of the Black Panther Party during the late 60s. His breakout performance in the critically acclaimed Get Out earned Kaluuya his first Golden Globe nomination.
Musician Jon Batiste’s will also get recognition for his work in the Pixar movie Soul with his first nomination for Best Score Motion Picture. The film will even complete for the Best Picture Animated.
The TV categories of the ceremony are less than colorful. While HBO’s hit show Love Craft County earned a Best Drama Series nomination, it did not receive any acting categories. Don Cheadle gets his sixth nomination for Best Television Actor-Musical/Comedy series for Black Monday; John Boyega will have his first nomination as the Amazon series Small Axe for Best Supporting Actor-Television.
This Golden Globes will be a new venture for Hollywood. More details are soon to come on how presentations and awards will be given out. However, some things will still be the same: the lights, the cameras, and the overindulgence of alcohol.
