The 2025 Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” was a profound celebration of Black dandyism, highlighting its enduring significance in Black culture. This year’s event, co-chaired by luminaries such as Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky, brought to the forefront the rich tapestry of Black sartorial elegance and its role as a form of resistance and self-expression.

Black dandyism, with roots tracing back to the 18th century, has long been a medium through which Black individuals assert identity, challenge societal norms, and reclaim narratives. The Met’s accompanying exhibition delved into this history, showcasing how tailored fashion has been instrumental in shaping Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora.

The red carpet was awash with ensembles that paid homage to this legacy. Colman Domingo’s Valentino attire and Teyana Taylor’s “Harlem Rose” cape were not just fashion statements but affirmations of heritage and pride . Rihanna’s announcement of her third pregnancy in a pinstripe ensemble further underscored the theme’s resonance, blending personal narrative with cultural homage.

This year’s gala was more than a fashion event; it was a reclamation of space and narrative. By centering Black dandyism, the Met Gala acknowledged the style’s role in challenging stereotypes and celebrating Black excellence. The event served as a reminder of the power of fashion as a tool for storytelling, resistance, and cultural affirmation .

In today’s context, where discussions around representation and identity are paramount, the 2025 Met Gala’s spotlight on Black dandyism was both timely and necessary. It honored the past, celebrated the present, and set a precedent for future dialogues in fashion and culture.
